Cities in the Path of Totality

Order Solar Eclipse Glasses, Made in USA

Eclipse chasers are often asked “Where is the best place to see the eclipse?” Having chased these most of my adult life, and having seen 13 of them so far, I always tell people “Anywhere that is in the path, and has good weather at eclipse time!” And that’s really true – you have to be in the path if you want to see totality (and that’s what all the fuss is about anyway), AND the weather has to cooperate! If it’s cloudy, you won’t see the eclipse at all. When an eclipse chaser is looking at where to go, they always (1) limit themselves to locations IN THE PATH, (2) look at weather predictions very carefully to select the places where weather has historically been good, and (3) have a bail-out plan with 2nd and 3rd choices (including transporation means to get there), in case the weather turns out to be looking bad the night before.

But of course, there might be other factors for people who are planning to see their first eclipse. Do you have family or friends in a particular location? Is there somewplace you’ve always wanted to visit that is in or near the path? How much time/money do you have in order to make the trip? What will be the easiest logistical way for you to get to an alternate location in case weather turns bad? No one can make those choices for you, because no one else is going to have exactly the same experience as you. On April 9, 2024, there will be as many eclipse-experience stories as there are people who set out to see this thing. Yours will be unique, and so your planning details will be unique. Just make sure you know what locations are going to be in the path of totality, and plan around that! And for those who are wondering – there is really nothing to see in the sky on the day before or after an eclipse. Everything up there happens on April 8, though the community you are visiting may have some elaborate and fun plans for eclipse weekend. Check out these plans on our Community Pages as they are collected.

Where will the path of totality be? We have lots of maps on eclipse2024.org, and we also have an exhaustive listing of every town, burg, city, hamlet and village we could find that is lucky enough to lie in the path. Here we go:

First, let’s list the states and provinces that are in the path.

IF YOU ARE NOT IN ONE OF THESE STATES OR PROVINCES, YOU WILL NOT SEE TOTALITY.

EVEN IF YOU ARE IN ONE OF THESE STATES OR PROVINCES, YOU STILL HAVE TO BE IN THE PATH TO SEE TOTALITY! See the maps we’ve included, and remember you MUST be in the gray shaded path, if you want to see totality!

Here is a rough map of the path through North America, so you can get your bearings:

Mexico

Portions of these states will see totality:

Durango Nayarit
Coahuila Sinaloa
Chihuahua* (This state is just barely in the path)

USA

Portions of these states will see totality:

Arkansas Illinois
Indiana Kentucky
Maine Missouri
New Hampshire New York
Ohio Oklahoma
Pennsylvania Texas
Vermont
Michigan* (This state is just barely in the path)
Tennessee* (This state is just barely in the path)

Canada

Portions of these provinces will see totality:

New Brunswick Ontario
Prince Edward Island Quebec
Nova Scotia* (This province is just barely in the path)
Newfoundland (but not Labrador)

All cities and towns that are in the path

(How do we know that these cities will be in the path? Check out our section on the technical details of eclipse calculations!)

It’s a pretty big list, so we will split it up by state/province. We’ve tried to list every town in the path, but if you know of one we missed, please let us know – we’ll be happy to include it!
