The Total Eclipse of April 8, 2024

Another total solar eclipse is coming to North America! This time, totality will also pass over Mexico and Canada – giving people all over North America another chance to experience this great celestial event.

In order to see totality, you have to be in the path of totality. If you aren’t in that path, you’ll only see a partial eclipse. You can learn more about those details with our simple eclipse viewing instructions guide.

This blog post will tell you about the 2024 eclipse as seen from the Burlington area in Vermont. Please check out all the links we’ve provided below to learn more about the 2024 total solar eclipse from other locations.

The Total Eclipse of April 8, 2024 in Burlington

Burlington is very well-placed to see totality! Though not right on the centerline, the downtown area is still deep in the path and will get a very respectable 3m15s of totality.

Where can I see the total eclipse?

Because of Burlington’s location in the path, you will be able to gain a few more seconds of totality by heading toward the centerline. The farther north and west you go (up to the centerline), the more totality you’ll see. So for example, at the airport, totality will last about 3m 12s. At the US2 exit off I-89, totality has increased to 3m25s. Heading up US2, the centerline lies just beyond Kinght Point State Park. (The Park itself will see 3m33s of totality.) Continuing up I-89 will get you to St. Albans. Here, you’re almost right on the centerline and will also get 3m33s in the shadow. Those few extra seconds are very nice to have, and the entire area is going to have a great experience on eclipse day!

Your viewing options may be limited if you head north on US2. It’s important to be safe when viewing an eclipse, and stopping on the side of the road is not recommended!

If you’re south of town, please note that Barre and Middlebury are right on the edge of the path. If you’re south of them, you won’t see totality at all.

What will I see on eclipse day?

Because Burlington is so well situated, if you leave town you’re only going to get less time in the shadow. If you have to escape clouds, then please see the blog posts we’ve written for Vermont, New Hampshire, Barre and Plattsburgh to get more info on viewing options near those locations.

Order eclipse glasses! Remember that even if you are in the path of totality, if the Sun is not COMPLETELY eclipsed you MUST always use ISO-certified eye protection to watch the eclipse. You MUST use your eclipse glasses to observe all the partial phases.

Use ISO-certified eye protection during the partial phases

ISO Certification

ISO Certification Always remember the rule for using eye protection during an eclipse: If there’s ANY bright part of the Sun showing, then you have to use your eclipse glasses to watch the event.

That means if you can see anything at all of the Sun through the glasses, then the Sun is too bright and you have to leave the glasses on! If you can see absolutely NO piece of the Sun through the eclipse glasses, then it’s safe to take them off. But the second any bright part of the Sun becomes visible again, you have to put them back on – and this can be mere seconds after you took them off.
