Subject:  Eclipse Events in Dallas, Oregon

Mayor’s Welcome to Dallas

What USA Today calls, “the biggest and best solar eclipse in American history” visits Dallas, Oregon on August 21st.  We have scheduled the totality to pass over Dallas at 10:17 a.m. that morning and our beautiful setting is a wonderful place from which to view what for many of us will be a once-in-a-lifetime event.  Not only will we be the largest city in the world to first be closest to the centerline for almost two minutes – all 15,000 of us - we are a friendly, welcoming, charming community, the best of small-town America set in the beautiful Willamette Valley of western Oregon.  Consider it “the” place to be to view this amazing phenomenon.

The State planners tell us that around 1,000,000 people will travel here to Oregon to get a good view of the darkness.  Portland and Eugene, our big population centers, are completely out of the path of totality, so folks there too will be venturing to the centerline for the experience.  So, why not come here to historic Dallas early and stay late to revel in the entire celebration where you will be treated as a visitor, not simply a tourist?

The centerpiece of “Eclipse Weekend” is a big viewing party on our large, historic downtown square surrounded by 19th century buildings.  We are calling our viewing party “Celebration on the Square” (what I call for fun, “Lights Out”) and we will be shutting down the streets and decorating our downtown world for this very festive occasion.  When the darkness arrives at 10:17 a.m. that Monday morning the celebratory atmosphere will turn quiet and introspective as the Eclipse inspires us to reverence for nature’s unique display of brilliance.

Coming early and staying late?  Dallas is in a wonderful location from which to venture out.  Surrounded by some of the finest vineyards and wineries in the world (18 wineries nearby), we are close to the all sorts of natural and man-made attractions.  The beautiful Oregon Coast just over the hill, the Evergreen Aviation Museum just north of us (Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose and more), famous birding sites, mountain biking, fine restaurants and so on.

We are now excitedly decorating our town for your arrival.  Banners, historic building tours, art in the windows, Eclipse science lectures, concerts, displays, local food vendors – we are planning for over 100 vendor booths – and so on.  One highlight will be special Eclipse themed movies and presentations in our restored Art Deco theater on the Square throughout the Weekend.  Local excitement is building and our events and decorations are still evolving as I write this.  Don’t get us wrong, this is not a fancied-up high-end sort of a place.  This is an authentic small-town rural Oregon experience we have on offer.  Friendly, open, helpful, interesting and very, very comfortable.  You will like it here.

Intrigued?  We have prepared a great visitors packet for you full of information about our community and the Eclipse, coupons, protective eyewear (important!), maps, things to do and our history.  To request a free packet, just email Jeremy at City Hall at or give him a call at 503-831-3502.  We also have our really cool Eclipse commemorative T-shirts available for a reasonable cost.

Where to stay?  It seems like all the standard hotel and motels along the path of totality here in Oregon have been booked up for Eclipse Weekend months ago.  All the 1,000 regular State park campsites were booked solid in an hour, they added 1,000 more and they were also booked up in an hour.  To help with the rush, the City of Dallas has opened up 100 campsites in our very nice Roger Jordan Park a few blocks from downtown.  These are well-served by our modern Aquatic Center which will provide restrooms and shower facilities for the campers.  Here is information on that option:

We will try to keep the flow of information going for you via the internet regarding the events and logistics surrounding the Eclipse Weekend here in Dallas.  Here are the primary sites to visit which include other options for accommodations in the area:  City of Dallas website.  Lots of general information about our community.   Section of the City of Dallas website devoted to Eclipse news.  The Dallas Downtown Association website which includes a whole section on the Eclipse and what will be happening downtown to include many details about the “Celebration on the Square” Eclipse viewing party in the center of town.  The Dallas Area Visitors Center website covers the Eclipse and local events.

In sum, we sure do hope that you will consider our Eclipse Weekend here in Dallas when you make your Eclipse viewing plans for August.  You will be most welcomed.
