Official Plans for viewing the eclipse from North Platte

North Platte's official page for information on viewing the 2017 eclipse!

The community of North Platte, while experiencing only one minute and 52 seconds of totality will be host to several “edger” viewing opportunities, at such diverse sites as the Feather River Vineyards and Grain Bin Antique Town. In the days leading up to 21 August, 2017, we will be hosting a number of educational and cultural enrichment activities, geared for all ages.

North Platte is the home of the world famous “World War II North Platte Canteen”. Between Christmas Day 1941 and April 1, 1946, local volunteers greeted more than six million service men and women on their way to and from the front lines of World War II. These volunteers served up hometown hospitality that has never been forgotten. We know how to host visitors!

We are partnering with the Lincoln County Historical Museum, Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, North Platte Community College, the North Platte Public Library, the Prairie Arts Center and the Neville Center for the Performing Arts to create great supplemental events for your groups. Programs in the works are historical presentations of Native American and early settlers’ reaction to past eclipses; Make and take art workshops; Astronomy education for all ages; Area historical and cultural presentations; And some good old-fashioned entertainment!

True to their heritage, the ranching communities in the Nebraska Sandhills are pulling out all of the stops to show you what life is like on what is still largely a frontier! Ranchers are opening their homes to offer unique lodging opportunities; Cattle drives, brandings and trail rides are in the works; Ranch rodeo demonstrations; Pit barbecues; Dances; Cowboy Poetry; Birdwatching and Nature Viewing; Geography and Archeology presentations; Driving tours; Aerial tours; Photography tours. . . . The list goes on and on.

Of course, there will also be nightly star parties in the dark Sandhills hosted by local astronomers.

All of this leads up to the main event – the 21 August, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse! The communities of Tryon, Stapleton and Arnold will be hosting festival viewing sites, complete with plenty of parking; Dedicated viewing space; Educational presentations; The comfort of tents, food, beverages, entertainment, souvenir vendors, and, of course, porta-potties. The sites will range in size from accommodating a few hundred to several hundred. Mass transit from North Platte’s hotels will be available.
